Many different strategies can be used to correct a tooth that has suffered decay. While tooth decay is a common dental condition, you might not have a well-formed understanding of the various ways that this routine issue can be treated.

Fillings

One of the most common ways of treating minor tooth decay is through the use of fillings. Modern fillings are usually made of either porcelain or a composite resin. While this is an excellent option for shallow cavities, it is insufficient more for extensive decay. This is due to the filling material being too weak to provide the type of support that a major tooth reconstruction would require.

Crowns

If a tooth was infected as a result of its decay, a crown may be necessary to save the tooth. During the treatment of a severely infected tooth, the interior tissue of it will have to be removed. This will leave the tooth extremely weak and fragile. A crown will act to protect the tooth so that the risk of it shattering can be eliminated. A crown will take some time to be prepared as it must be specially made to fit your tooth. As a result, you may need at least two visits for this procedure. The first visit will involve evaluating and measuring the tooth for the crown, and it will be placed on the next visit.

Overlays

It is common for teeth to suffer severe decay on the chewing surface. This is due to food getting trapped in the grooves of the tooth. When this surface becomes severely decayed, a traditional filling will prove insufficient to restore the tooth. An overlay can be an excellent alternative that can provide the type of protect your tooth requires. An overlay is a special type of filling that is prepared in a laboratory and attached to the tooth with a medical grade adhesive. This is an extremely effective solution for treating severe but localized tooth decay.

Bonding

When a tooth has suffered at least partial decay over much of its exterior, a substantial amount of the tooth may need to be removed to eliminate this decay. To protect the remaining tooth and restore its appearance, bonding can be used. This involved applying several layers of bonding material until the size and shape of the tooth are restored. Dental bonding is highly durable, but it is not indestructible. After many years, the bonding may need to be replaced to continue to protect the tooth.
